Coaching
for Professional Learning

The challenge of embracing change at a time when experts, including Sir Ken Robinson, are calling for a transformation in the way teachers work with children and young people, has made high quality professional learning in schools and preschools an imperative. Coaching as a strategy for enabling teachers to reflect deeply on their practice (and its links with their personal theories) and identify and plan appropriate changes has the potential to drive collaboration and innovation at a range of levels. This session will provide participants with a deeper understanding of what it means to coach and be coached in an educational context. It will link the process of coaching to a view of change based upon understandings from cognitive neuroscience and opportunities will be provided to explore and practice the essential skills of coaching in a personalised context. In particular, participants will consider ways of using coaching to effectively improve teamwork and develop an empowering approach to performance development.

Towards an Inquiry Classroom:
Making the most of Learner Curiosity

Inquiry has become an everyday skill for people in all walks of life. It is also at the heart of creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship. The ability to inquiry by asking searching questions, investigating these skilfully, making sense of information gleaned through multiple sources, communicating understanding and putting ideas into action requires a mindset and a range of skills now considered indispensable for living and earning in the 2020’s and 2030’s.

In this session, participants will develop a shared understanding of inquiry  - its uses, the process, the essential skills (and ways of explicitly building these in learners) and ways of implementing an approach to inquiry that suits students at various stages of intellectual development

Setting up a Thinking Classroom
in 2020

In 2020, do you want the children and students you work with to be deep, agile thinkers? Do you want them to enjoy the challenge of thinking deeply and independently about what they are learning? If you want to set up a learning space that drives the development of powerful thinkers – then this is the session for you!

Thinking comes naturally to all learners, but only systematic, purposeful thinking can help children and students become truly powerful learners. If NAPLAN results have taught us anything, it is that for learners to achieve in the highest bands of achievement, their ability to think – to infer, analyse, synthase and resolve complexity – is critical
